How it was, where it was

Venice (Italy)

“La Fenice” theater in Venice

It has been 20 years since the fire of “La Fenice” Theatre.
For “La Fenice” Theatre it was required to restore the original ceiling, producing larch beams with the same dimensions but higher capacity, in compliance with the fire code.
It was a structurally complicated issue: the sizes of the structural elements could not be changed but they need to comply with the fire resistance requested according to their use.
Giovanni Spatti then suggested to “hang” the stages from the concrete roof: in case of fire then the structural model would be different and the loads instead of being transmitted to the ground, would be hung; therefore there would be the transmission of tension forces rather than compression ones.
